The bite of icy air, the crunch of tyres on hard snow and the thrill of truly money can’t buy experiences was the exhilarating setting for the adrenalin-packed recent launch of the titanium-studded Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero at the Lamborghini Winter Academia in Livigno, Italy. Taking exciting high-octane exploits to unprecedented new levels and inspired by the avant-garde designs and technical mastery of both its partners – tyre legend Pirelli on the one hand, and Lamborghini Squadra Corse on the other – Roger Dubuis races off the grid in 2018 by offering red-hot performance in super-cold conditions.

The latest examples of what happens when visionary engineers meet incredible watchmakers started the year in heart-pounding style with the February launch of the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero: an off-the-radar reinterpretation of Pirelli’s incomparable expertise in the world of high-end tyres for premium vehicles. Embedded in the very DNA of the Maison, the iconic and deliberately extravagant Excalibur epitomizes the boldly adventurous nature of a Manufacture that has always been determined to stay several laps ahead of the pack.

Complete with drifting, night-driving and the pure adrenalin rush of testing up to 700 HP on snow and ice, the event was a made in heaven match for the money can’t buy experiences ethos of the Roger Dubuis/Pirelli “Perfect Fit” partnership. Silent snow-capped peaks vibrated to the roar of the supercars, including the record-breaking Huracán Performante, as professional Lamborghini instructors treated automobile aficionados to a thrilling two-day experience of learning to handle the fleet – naturally fitted with Pirelli Sottozero tyres – in low-grip situations. The international benchmark for ice-driving courses, the Lamborghini Winter Academia has been held annually since 2012, offering guests a uniquely unconventional and unforgettable driving adventure.

rogerdubuisjonolsson-28Irresistible mutual attraction was the spark of the relationships Roger Dubuis – a brand with performance engraved in its very DNA – has ignited with Pirelli and Lamborghini Squadra Corse. All share common values encapsulating a radical R&D vision, the same flair for disruptive designs, superlative technical engineering, an attitude in sync with some of the most demanding clients the world has to offer, and extreme aesthetics.

Aside from the iconic Roger Dubuis skeleton double flying tourbillon, the unequivocal focus of the 47 mm Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero comes down to the latter. It is inspired by Pirelli’s legendary Sottozero winter tyres, which were the protagonists of the Lamborghini Winter Academia. The guests of the driving school organized by the carmaker from Sant’Agata Bolognese were in fact able to try a particular version of the Pirelli Sottozero 3, specially studded for the occasion. Together with a Pirelli expert, the guests participated in a truly educational course on tyres, above all enabling them to learn about the importance of winter ones in extreme conditions. Performance and precision are the chief characteristics shared by Pirelli’s winter tyres and the new Roger Dubuis creation.

A white ceramic bezel with blue markings offsets the titanium and sapphire crystal case proffering an incredible view of the new RD105SQ hand-wound caliber, signature blue Astral Skeleton and multi-colored power reserve indicator representing a cool nod to racing-car cockpit fuel gauges. Speedometer-like seconds counters enhanced with automobile-inspired pointers rim the emblematic flying tourbillons at 5 and 7 o’clock respectively.

Forcefully expressing the ‘disruptive materials and progressive complications’ mantra of the brand that dares to be different, the real surprise in the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero lies in the strap. Like its predecessors, this distinctive strap features rubber inlays from certified Pirelli tyres and an interior reproducing the profile of a Pirelli Cinturato intermediate tyre; but this time it is also adorned on top with legendary tread motifs reproducing the profile of the best in class Pirelli Sottozero tyre. Characterized by this elegant tread pattern with an asymmetric design, it is set with dozens of titanium studs emulating the nails in its namesake designed for better grip under icy conditions.

A bold and thoroughly exclusive statement of uncompromising quality, design and innovation, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Sottozero is limited to just eight pieces intended for the ultimate watchmaking connoisseurs. Such are the owners of Roger Dubuis’ timepieces – individuals who dare to be rare and dare to wear world-first watches with just a hint of craziness.

Roger Dubuis announced the launch of its Haute Couture watch trilogy offering a whole new take on its supremely feminine Velvet collection. Haute Couture is a magical blend of traditional artisan skills and avant-garde modernism. Directly inspired by this phenomenon, and in celebration of the Roger Dubuis woman, three new Velvet Caviar models are a tribute to the expressive innovation and risk-taking for which the Manufacture is renowned.

Driven by Roger Dubuis’ creativity, respect for tradition and a commitment to quality, backed by decades of experience in working with unprecedented materials, Velvet continues its spectacular trajectory with CAVIAR, a daring dance between Haute Joaillerie and a timekeeping focus that is unequivocally on women… as well as supremely elegant fun.

velvet-caviar-images-3Inspiring, remarkable and enviably strong – being a Diva in the world of Roger Dubuis is a matter of temperament and a multi-faceted personality, coupled with a powerful dose of energy and considered emotion. The peerless complexity of feminine nature endows women with a unique ability to alternately reveal different sides of who they are, and to proudly flaunt a given facet of their character depending on the situation or their mood.

The contemporary and seductive Velvet collection cultivates the art of the extravagant, and plays out with graphic motifs on dials, subtly distorting the shapes of cases, turning lugs into precious links. Mechanically powered like all Roger Dubuis’ feminine models, these glamorous tributes to accomplished and resourceful femininity dance night and day to the beat of an automatic RD830 caliber.

Coupled with the collection’s signature diamond-studded white or pink gold cases, Velvet Caviar brings an attractive choice of straps and dials. Each will enable women to express their mood of the day or one of the multiple facets of their nature. Graced with striking color contrasts, shimmering mother-of-pearl or darkly sophisticated black lacquer, the distinctive faces of these stunning models feature feminine flourishes reflecting a rich and varied character.

Their distinctive Haute Couture origins are showcased through a choice of spectacularly sparkling straps made of miniscule black or white crystal marbles inspired by the finest caviar. In addition to its appealing sparkling effect, this unique and innovative material picks up the light in an inimitably elegant, utterly sophisticated manner, without a trace of any form of ostentation. This is the perfect match for the most discerning diva.

Drawing upon all its unparalleled technical skill and expertise in working with ‘disruptive ‘materials, Roger Dubuis now leverages its recent motorsports experience by transforming a polymer into a rubber-lined molten material sprinkled with light-reflecting “spangled dust”. This then hardens, creating a wholly 21st century material that closely resembles a stunningly elegant fabric – but isn’t. Powerful and determined in the boardroom with an all-black Velvet Caviar; dreamily romantic in sparkling all-white and silver tones when the lights go down; playful and brilliantly versatile with a refined black strap and white dial combo on the morningCOFFEE run or at a fun lunch date – there are many different ways to be a modern-day diva

Manufacture Roger Dubuis hurtles off the starting grid at the Abu Dhabi world premiere of its Huracan Super Trofeo sponsorship. February 2018 saw the kick-off of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo 2018 season at the legendary Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The event marks the Manufacture’s first-time appearance as official sponsor for the brand that dares to be different. Fuelling its track record as a ‘serial innovator’, Roger Dubuis set the pace on February 2nd and 3rd 2018 at the world premiere of its sponsorship of the Huracan Super Trofeo.

The prestigious Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi will represent a perfect venue in which to celebrate and consolidate its recently established partnerships with iconic car maker, Lamborghini, and the high-caliber Hong Kong-based FFF Racing Team. Proudly sporting Roger Dubuis branding, around 20 Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeos are expected to line up for the start of the legendary Lamborghini one-make series’ 2018 racing season.

Super Trofeo sponsorshipRoger Dubuis and the motorsport world are kindred spirits, sharing DNA that includes dedication to performance and precision… along with a determination to stay ahead of the pack. To mark the 2017 launch of their high-speed partnership, Manufacture Roger Dubuis technical specialists drew inspiration from the Lamborghini spirit in rising to the challenge of creating the first horological expression of this proud automobile alliance: the 45 mm Excalibur Aventador S timepiece.

Bearing the inimitable Lamborghini “Giallo Orion” yellow paint code picked up in a number of design features, the 88-piece Excalibur Aventador S Yellow limited edition is propelled by the specially developed Duotor caliber. Inclined at a similar angle to the performance-enhancing longitudinal placement of Lamborghini engines, its distinctive double balance wheel is supported by holders shaped like triangular wheel suspension assemblies. This Lamborghini-exclusive, ultra-dynamic timepiece lives up to the partnership’s “Powered by Raging Mechanics” signature.SUPER-TROFEO-3

The perfect platform for Roger Dubuis to showcase its indomitable spirit, the Super Trofeo will feature a spectacular Roger Dubuis pop-up area offering clients a unique digital experience, complete with outsize visuals. Offering a combination of high-end hospitality, it will be a fixture at the next two Super Trofeo rounds scheduled to take place in Dubai later in mid-February and early March.

In addition to this close-up and personal encounter with motorsport magic, a number of lucky Roger Dubuis clients invited to watch the inaugural Super Trofeo race had an exceptional opportunity to visit the paddocks and meet drivers from the FFF team. Dedicated to providing a professional platform for the discerning driver to race alongside the elite in the most prestigious GT racing arenas in Europe and Asia, the FF Team shares the Geneva watchmaker’s fascination for – and in-depth knowledge of – the world of “haute mécanique”, the high-octane mechanical equivalent of haute couture. It also demonstrates an undeniable ability to compete with the best and attract connoisseurs of discerning taste.

Roger Dubuis launches two new creations for women – the Blossom Velvet Pink and Blossom Velvet Blue both multi-petal expressions of sensuality. The 36 mm case of the Blossom Velvet Pink and Blossom Velvet Blue respectively crafted in pink or white gold is rimmed with two rows of brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the bezel and lugs, transforming the Velvet’s classic central third lug into a precious link.

These sparkling gems surround the characteristic split-level mother-of-pearl dial graced with an engraved and sculpted floral marquetry motif. The signature Velvet central tonneau or barrel shape – contributing to its trompe l’oeil effect and swept over by the hours and minutes hands – is delicately accentuated by diamonds.

Gifted artisans have played with softly curved shapes and subtle shades of pink or blue to form a unique floral décor skillfully fashioned from an exceptionally thick plate of Grand Feu enamel. The challenges involved in this choice of material and the way of working with it provide a classic example of Roger Dubuis’ determination to consistently push both aesthetic and technical boundaries.

It also epitomizes the Manufacture’s perpetual quest for innovative ways of combining these two fundamental aspects of its expertise. The delicate sculpting and engraving process ensures the optimal precision one expects in high-end watchmaking, it is the polisher’s meticulous hand finishing that softens the shapes and ensures a delightfully gentle visual impression.

Beneath this vibrantly ‘alive’ dial with its clever depth effects ticks a mechanical self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve, Caliber RD821 bearing the iconic Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. It beats to the tune of Roger Dubuis’ keen awareness that women who love aesthetic beauty also appreciate technical refinement.

The watches feature a shimmering satin finish fabric strap – in a blushing pink or cerulean blue matching the dial – providing a perfectly smooth, lustrous backdrop for the 154 diamonds totaling approximately 1.9 carats and the elaborately ornamental dial. It is clasped in place by a pink gold adjustable folding buckle set with brilliant cut diamonds. This floral wonder composing a poetic anthem to womanhood is issued in an 88-piece limited edition.

technical life

Excalibur, the iconic and prodigal Roger Dubuis collection – with its signature blend of technical excellence and powerful design will take centre stage at the SIHH 2017. The daring luxury Swiss maison will introduce three code-breaking, convention-blasting Excalibur models exemplifying the revolutionary approach that is all about deconstruction – splitting, fissures, ruptures and diversion – as a prelude to generating new aesthetic and technical life.

When it comes to progressive complications, the hand-wound 590-part RD101 Quatuor movement – beating at a frequency of 16 Hz (115,200 vph) with its four sprung balances and five differentials – is as progressive as they get. 2017 will see it welcome its very own disruptive material: cobalt chrome.

technical lifeThis high-performance cobalt chrome alloy clothing the 48 mm-diameter case, bezel, case-back and crown is produced using the extremely exclusive MicroMelt®technology that represents just 0.1% of worldwide metallurgy.

Widely associated with aeronautics and astronomy, this process involves melting and atomizing the alloy into a fine powder by introducing the molten metal to a high-pressure stream of gas using a dedicated vacuum induction melting gas atomization unit. This powder is then blended and screened to a controlled diameter, poured into canisters that are sealed and subjected to hot isotactic pressing to achieve full denseness, before being hot-worked to produce hot-rolled bars and then processed to finished size.

Roger Dubuis naturally appreciates the fact that it enables the creation of specific alloys (such as metal and non-metal) that other techniques do not permit, as well as resulting in controlled porosity that in turn ensures stabilized alloy quality.

In making such technical and aesthetic choices, the Manufacture adopts this state-of-the-art material with watch wearers firmly in mind, since it is 100% biocompatible, extremely corrosion-resistant thanks to the spontaneous formation of a passive protective film, as well as outstandingly durable thanks to its multiphase structure and the precipitation of carbides.

In this bold, fresh interpretation of the Excalibur Quatuor, the gleaming cobalt chrome makes a pleasing contrast with the blue PVD-coated movement barrel cage and bridges, as well as the dial, hour-marker and alligator leather strap.

Dynamic red and white accents are provided by the printed speedometer-style minute track, the white gold skeleton hands with SuperLumiNova®-filled red tips, as well as the red strap stitching.

Synonymous with the contemporary outdoor, automobile-inspired vibe embodied in the Roger Dubuis Technical Skeletons, the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Automatic is a fresh blue/black/red expression of the talent and ingenuity deployed by the pioneer of contemporary skeletons, showcasing its ability to raise this workmanship to the rank of a contemporary art form.

Leveraging the expertise acquired over the years through its avant-garde movements revealing its own unique vision of this principle, the generous 45 mm titanium case is interpreted according to the Spider concept that extends skeletonization beyond the movement to include the case, flange and hands.

In this new Excalibur Spider Skeleton Automatic version, cool colour contrasts are the keynote, achieved by DLC treatment of the case, and crown, vulcanised rubber details on the bezel, crown and container, along with red accents provided by the ring, crown, hand tips and strap stitching.

The multi-material strap with its black rubber base and blue calf leather inlay is secured by a DLC-treated titanium folding buckle. This ruggedly handsome model is driven by Caliber RD820SQ – which in 2015 became the first Roger Dubuis automatic skeleton movement.

All faces of its 167 components are meticulously hand-crafted in accordance with the stringent quality criteria and prestigious finishing governing the Poincon de Genevecertification.

The design and height of the famous Roger Dubuis micro-rotor – a first in a skeletonized automatic Roger Dubuis movement – effectively enhance the spectacular 3D effect favoured by the Manufacture, as does the raised position of the signature Astral Skeleton decor.

Issued in an 88-piece limited edition, the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Automatic is a vibrant microcosm of the traditions, innovation and expertise cultivated and perpetually enriched by the specialist of technical and architectural mechanics.

Like the electric blue lava bursting from certain volcanoes, the Excalibur Essential 36 Automatic appears with an arrestingly beautiful black DLC-treated titanium case topped by a bezel set with 48 blue sapphires. Simultaneously evoking fire and ice, the sparkling gems reflect and accentuate the cool gleam of the blue PVD-coated dial with its shimmering sun-brushed finish.

This elegant smaller-sized interpretation of the Excalibur carries the collection’s trademark fluted bezel and triple lugs, together with the radiating Roman numerals. The latter are deliciously interrupted by an ever-useful small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, complete with a discreet yet legible date display. The versatile 36 mm diameter makes it suitable for both masculine and feminine wrists, and there is sure to be a gender mix among the lucky few who will own one of this 28-piece limited edition.

It is equipped with the RD830 calibre featuring a 22K pink gold rotor that may be admired in action through the transparent sapphire crystal case-back and ensures a 48-hour power reserve. Setting a perfectly elegant finishing touch, the matching blue alligator leather strap is fitted with DLC-treated titanium folding buckle.

Velvet Ribbon

Roger Dubuis unveils two ultra-glamorous Velvet Ribbon creations at an exclusive event in Shanghai on October 20, 2016. They will set a glittering culminating touch to the year by showcasing its impressive range of Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie skill through these refined tributes to sophisticated femininity. Alongside these twin launches, the event will turn the spotlight firmly on Roger Dubuis’ iconic Excalibur collection.

The Velvet Ribbon with two elegant and timeless new creations. For the jeweller of rare artistic timepieces, Velvet represents an opportunity to showcase twin fields of expertise fully mastered by Roger Dubuis: mechanical high-end horology and stunningly creative jewellery-making. These charismatic models are distinguished by voluptuous trompe l’oeil cases combining tonneau (barrel) and circular shapes, along with split-level dials creating fascinating depth effects and distinctive ornamental central lugs.

Velvet Ribbon takes things to the next level by combining the uncompromising standards epitomized by Poinçon de Genèvecertification with an undeniable talent for design as well as gem-setting excellence. These dressy and superbly glamorous models have a unique sparkle to match that of the refined and discerning women who will adopt them. The two new creations completing the trilogy are issued in limited editions playing with the Roger Dubuis lucky number 8 and admirably confirming the ongoing challenge set – and risen to – by the Manufacture: Dare to be Rare.

The new Velvet Ribbon wrist-worn timepiece is every inch the dainty diva with its 385 gemstones totaling approx. 8.67 carats. Its 36 mm white gold case and decorative lugs fully paved with baguette-cut diamonds create a pleasing contrast with the brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the inner bezel ring and ribbons. The latter are tied into delicate bows looping through the famous Velvet central lugs framing the white gold appliques at 12 and 6 o’clock. Not content with adorning the wrist of the sophisticated diva, Roger Dubuis also graces her neckline with a ravishing pearl sautoir necklace. This stunning Velvet Ribbon jewellery piece also offers a fine example of Haute Horlogerie as envisioned by the Manufacture: an ideal blend of competence, creativity and craftsmanship. It takes the ribbon concept to its ultimate conclusion by making time literally dangle as a pendant from the end of a flowing strand of immaculate Akoya pearls, interspersed with the lustrous glow of onyx beads. Its 19 streaming rows of 266 onyx beads tipped by Akoya pearls create a mirror-image white on black effect complementing the black on white theme of the main necklace.

On this model, the baguette-cut diamonds paving the white gold case and decorative lug also cover the entire dial. Free of any numerals so as to give pride of place to the splendid gem-setting, this scintillating face of time also admirably highlights the Velvet ‘barrel in a circle’ theme. In tune with the subtle retro charm of this Velvet Ribbon, the RD801 caliber is a mechanical hand-wound movement, naturally endowed with Poinçon de Genèvefinishing. Only eight examples of this creation are to emerge from the Roger Dubuis workshops and each will in fact be unique because of the nature of the gems themselves, as well as the individual fine workmanship involved in setting them.

undeniable gift

In the Diva Year that Roger Dubuis has proclaimed the year of the Velvet, the Manufacture proudly presents the complete Velvet by Massaro trilogy: a runway-ready line-up of three 88-piece limited models embodying the treasures of creativity, inspiration and imagination shared by two Maisons with an undeniable gift for exalting feminine charm and elegance.

The Velvet Diva is in her element amid glamorous settings, bright lights and red carpets. A world in which posture and attitude steal the show – quite like those displayed by the fashion models striding down the catwalks of Parisian haute couture shows wearing unique footwear by Massaro.

undeniable giftLike Roger Dubuis, Massaro demonstrates a fearless air for daring and iconoclastic interpretations of its art. Other natural affinities between the two Maisons include dedication to fine craftsmanship, the use of innovative materials and a love of original aesthetics. They both know the power of subtle details that create an unmistakable and unforgettable allure.

Anything is possible is the longstanding Massaro mantra expressing a mind-set entirely in tune with the Roger Dubuis approach to the art of watchmaking – and to its self-appointed role as the jeweller of rare artistic masterpieces. Built on visionary interaction, lateral thinking and boundless enthusiasm, this is a match made in creative heaven that has resulted in an original trilogy of timepieces epitomizing the best of two undeniably interrelated worlds.

Each of the three creations is an anthem to the potent femininity of the 1950s Hollywood golden age, in tribute more particularly to three iconic Divas who personified this magic: Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo and Lana Turner. All three interpretations bear the prestigious Poinçon de Genève, feature the signature Velvet characteristics and are driven by a Roger Dubuis mechanical self-winding movement beating. That which both unites them and sets each apart are their individual straps crafted from authentic Massaro leather used for its footwear collections. Straps that embrace and embellish the wrist in an intimate manner reminiscent of the way a show both surrounds and adorns a woman’s foot.

The strap of the model giving a tip of the hat to silver-screen legend Rita Hayworth exudes a powerful and provocative presence. It also reflects a taste for living both passionately and dangerously that chimes with the Roger Dubuis vibe and with the flame-haired Love Goddess it honors. It is graced with a pleated leather motif co-designed by Massaro in the same warm gold tones that are featured on its shoes. This glowing, luminous theme is matched by the yellow gold barrel-shaped Velvet center of the dial, framed by radiating hour-markers on a satin sunburst exterior.

The version dedicated to the Greta Garbo is instilled with an aura of mystery, expressed through black feathers delicately crafted by Laurence Le Constant and cleverly interwoven into the dusky strap, as well as the black lacquered dial with tone-on-tone charcoal markings evoking the elusive brunette nicknamed The Swedish Sphinx.

The sophisticated plumes create a delightful contrast with the warmth of the pink gold case and the sparkle of diamonds. Ice and fire, imbued with a unique touch of class and elegance typical of what one might find running down a pair of dainty Massaro heels.

The homage paid to the platinum blonde bombshell Lana Turner is entirely worthy of her femme fatale image. This model encircles the wrist with a distinctive Massaro silver strap featuring a row of pearls running down the center, evoking the shimmering luster of those its namesake loved to string around her neck, as well as the pristine whiteness of her unforgettable turban. This opalescent theme is echoed in the white gold case, appliques and brushed barrel shaped dial center.
